Historic Tallahassee, Florida -

As far back at the 16th century, Spanish explorers encountered the Apalachee Indian tribe, which made its home in what is today Tallahassee. In the next century, Christian missionaries established missions throughout Florida, including Mission San Luis, which is a fascinating historic site full of informative, interactive exhibits.

In the early 1800s, Tallahassee was chosen as the capital of the Florida territory for its central location between the cities of Pensacola and St. Augustine. During the Civil War, Tallahassee was the only Southern capital to evade capture by the Union Army.

The architecture of Florida's central government seat is a mix of Greek revival and modern styles. The 22-story Executive Tower built in the 1970s is flanked by the chambers of the Senate and House in domed buildings on either side. Just in front of this building is the 1902 Historic Capitol building, with a classic rotunda and halls. Inside, visitors will find a museum chronicling Florida State's political history.
